Android 6.1 rumored to arrive in June 2016, split-screen support in tow

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Google’s engineers are already working on baked-in split-screen multitasking support for Android. This was after the Pixel C team opened an AMA on Reddit to offer potential and existing customers the opportunity to pick their brains. Unsurprisingly, the topic of split-screen came up more than once. While some OEMs, like Samsung and LG, have built the feature in to their Android skins, Google is yet to bake it in to the core Android software.

Galaxy S7 pre-orders rumored to open on Feb. 21, free Gear VR for early shoppers

According to Android World‘s ‘reliable’ sources, Samsung will open pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 on the same day that it announces the device at MWC in Barcelona; February 21. What’s more, it’s claimed that early shoppers who order between Feb 21 and March 10 will receive a free Gear VR set.

Pre-ordered phones are purportedly due for shipment from March 11th, which matches up with a previous rumor that the device will get its retail launch on that day. Android World says customers who want the free VR set will need to register through a separate promotional site, and receive the unit at a later date.

The pressure is on for Samsung to knock it out of the park with the Galaxy S8. Between the competition from the new LG G6, Apple’s upcoming 10th anniversary iPhone and trying to rebuild its reputation, Samsung may be considering including a generous return period for its new flagship phones.

Samsung again said to drop physical keys with Galaxy S8, thin bezels & 3D touch-like features rumored

With the Note 7 fiasco still winding down, Samsung is likely hoping to move past it with their next flagship. Currently slated for April, a new rumor (via David Ruddock) corroborates several earlier reports that the Galaxy S8 is finally removing capacitive buttons for software navigation keys.

Andy Rubin’s Essential rocked with executive departures as UK carrier launch rumored

With Essential already missing Andy Rubin’s self-appointed June ship date, the ambitious startup has been hit with major executive departures. LG G5 rumored to feature metal unibody design, removable battery with unusual detachable bottom edge

As unusual rumors go, this is up there with the best of them. According to CNET Korea‘s sources, LG is planning and testing a G5 design featuring an all-metal structure, but with a semi-modular design for removing and replacing the battery.

The LG G5 is expected to be announced right before MWC next month, after the company sent out invitations to press for an event on February 21st in Barcelona.

OnePlus 3 rumored to launch on June 14th

June is shaping up to be a pretty busy month in the tech world, as it usually is. Google I/O has now passed us, and we can now look forward to what’s next. For Apple fans, that’s WWDC next month. For those who prefer Android we have both Lenovo’s Tech World event and the Moto Z launch, as well as a OnePlus unveiling.

The OnePlus event is set to be the first to take place in a VR world set in space, and will allegedly be happening on June 14th, if a conversation between a customer and a OnePlus CS rep is anything to go by…
