Google Wallet gains ability to send money to any contact using just a phone number

While Google has shifted its focus to Android Pay for contactless payments, Google Wallet has needed to reinvent itself somewhat as a peer-to-peer payment system. With the latest update, it’s become a whole lot easier to send money to your friends, family and contacts.

From today, the updated app on both iOS and Android will let you send money to anyone on your contact list, even if you don’t have their email address. You can send money to them using their phone number, and it’s secure and fast.

6.2 billion – the number of smartphones & tablets on the planet by 2020, says App Annie

Data from App Annie suggests that the total number of smartphones and tablets on the planet will hit 6.2 billion by 2020 – up from 2.6B today. That would be 80% of the forecast population of 7.76B people.

The analytics company told Bloomberg that the strongest growth will be seen in India, Indonesia, China, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey as cheaper phones hit the market. For many of those in developing countries, the post-PC era has already arrived, a smartphone or tablet serving as their only Internet-enabled device …

T-Mobile’s latest un-carrier move is ‘DIGITS,’ a Google Voice-inspired phone number service

[UPDATE: T-Mobile pulled their DIGITS sign-up page after a glitch exposed unintended customer information. It appears the issue is now solved and the page is back up and running.]

Known for pushing the envelope, as far as cellular carriers are concerned, T-Mobile has disclosed the details of its new program ‘DIGITS’ in an un-carrier announcement today. Certainly taking cues from Google Voice, the new Digits initiative aims to provide users with phone number flexibility and convenience, and includes multiple phone number solutions as well.
