‘Hey Google’ hotword could be coming to Assistant on smartphones too

Google Assistant has expanded to a lot of devices this year, and that means there’s probably lots of devices you own that are always listening for the “OK Google” hotword. When the Google Home landed, Google added “Hey Google”, which had the side effect of helping avoid setting off other devices. Now, it appears that Google could be bringing that hotword to smartphones.

Google app 7.14 reveals redesigned ‘Explore’ for Assistant apps, ‘Hey Google’ hotword, more [APK Teardown]

Two weeks ago, we revealed that the Google app was working on a bottom bar redesign. The latest version 7.14 shows Google refining that interface, while revamping the “Explore” page for Assistant apps, adding “Hey Google” on phones, and other tweaks.

Chrome OS ditching ‘OK Google’ hotword, likely to make way for incoming Google Assistant

We’ve been hearing a ton of new details lately regarding the upcoming launch of Google Assistant on Chrome OS, and recently, more and more moves are being made behind-the-scenes to prepare for the change. Today, it’s been discovered that Google has tossed out the current hotword support on Chromebooks to make way for the Assistant.

Chrome 46 comes to stable channel, removes ‘OK Google’ hotword search on desktop

Google earlier this week pushed the Chrome Android app to version 46, and now the browser’s desktop clients and Chrome OS are seeing the update as well.
